Submission FAQs for illustrators

What is a portfolio (or at least our version of one)?

It’s a selection of your BEST work, showcasing consistency, great quality finish, attention to detail and lots of personality shining through!

We are super flexible with how you share your portfolio, it could be your website, or a portfolio site (eg Behance), it could be a PDF of images. It’s up to you. Feel free to share your socials, we love to see your ‘behind the scenes’ stuff.

Do I have to be a professional illustrator, or can I be a recent graduate?

You can be either of the above, what we are interested to see is a good body of great work. (see above) If you are a recent graduate, it would be great to see some personal projects alongside your uni work too. Show us what you’re made of!

Do I need to be from the North, or based in the North?

Either. But most definitely have Northern Roots and Big Ideas!

Do you represent illustrators from diverse or under-represented backgrounds?

ABSOLUTELY! We are fully inclusive, embrace diversity and would love to see your work. Send your portfolio to submissions@northernillo.com

What next?

Submit your portfolio of course! We will respond to every submission we receive, but please be patient (we get a lot of emails).

Not sure if you’re ready to submit to an agent yet?

We offer 1-2-1 portfolio reviews where we can discuss your current portfolio, help you build one, or discuss how to develop further.

We also offer a few mentoring opportunities too throughout the year, these sessions are tailored to meet your needs as an illustrator.
